I have worked in the security industry for over 36 years, and over the years women have been underestimated, judged, or not recognised for their valuable contribution to the industry. But we at Tactical Security have always recruited openly and had a transparent selection process to everyone, making it equal and fair to all.
I want a big strong, experienced and life skilled Doorman with a presence? Really, well I am 5 foot 5 inches and I have worked every place or area in and out of the country that you can imagine, and I have several women around 5 foot and a bit or nothing, who are very capable operatives.
Unfortunately people judge the book by the cover, but you need to read the book fully then make an assessment of the book. Even then it will be an individuals assessment and opinion of the book, not the true picture of reality.
Over time some places, venues or locations have said they only want Men, Women are weak if a fight starts. A male presence will put fights off especially if they are big, well it can also be a challenge or a target, or a medal of honour in certain circles.
At the end of the day, Men and Women can equally work together, it’s about assessing the risks and looking at what you have to work with and tasking operators accordingly when on-site.
Unfortunately, the industry can discriminate due to stereotyping, he/she is too small, too young, too old, too fat, no experience. I always say why do you want to work in this industry? what skills do you have to offer to us? Then expand and develop on the other skills that are required. It might take longer with some people than others, so what, if you still gain or end up with the same outcome, yes they are fit for purpose.
It can be very difficult at times, change and changing mindsets, attitudes or belief systems. Once they’ve made their mind up, people are set in their ways.
We at Tactical are of a firm belief that everyone is treated equally, and should be equally rewarded accordingly in the security industry. Tactical will always openly and actively welcome applicants who are women, and train and develop them accordingly, no different to men or other.
