Protect Your property, assets, and business from criminal damage, theft and burglars.
You may have invested a great deal of time, energy and money in your home, property, business or premises, but criminals or burglars make it their business to break in, steal, damage or desecrate property.
Protect your property or business from the outside in, target hardening.
- A well-maintained exterior free of rubbish, obstacles or graffiti will reduce the likelihood of your property, business being targeted by criminals. So try to remove any rubbish, or graffiti. If any appears on a nearby wall or structure, call your local authority council, and request they send their specialist environmental team, to clean and remove it.
- Identify areas that may be vulnerable to forced entry and have them made more secure, think as a criminal then risk assess your property, this should help you put measures, blockers in place.
- Make sure all doors are locked and secure when not in use, and appropriate counter measures put in place and monitored. This should ensure the risk is reduced for unauthorised entry.
- Make sure you have a monitored or an alarm and that it’s fully tested, and operational.
- Make sure your CCTV is tested and operational, provides facial recognition as well as good quality images and covers any vulnerable areas. 24-hour digital CCTV is also highly recommended.
- Make sure that rubbish or litter wheelie bins are stored away as these can be climbed on to gain access to the building, especially via the first floor, or boundary walls.
- Make sure there is sufficient lighting around the premises, using P.I.R.s and especially loading areas, or any entry egress.
- Consider moving attractive or high-value goods away from view or display windows.
- Prune any overgrown bushes or nearby trees, as they can provide cover for anyone trying to hide from view.
- Doors and windows are particularly vulnerable – use security-rated products to make them more burglar-resistant.
- External shutters, although effective, may require planning approval. Use attack-resistant laminated glass in sturdy frames where possible. Alternatively, film can be applied to glass to make it more resilient. Also consider keeping blinds or curtains closed at all times, or look at random times open close or shut policy.
- Anti-ram raider bollards mounted externally can be used to protect frontages but may require planning approval.
- Consider a local reputable security company to carry out random checks on you, your property or business.
- Try not to keep cash on the premises and always use a bolted-down safe with a time lock and anti-tamper sensors that trigger an alarm.
- Make sure stockrooms are locked and, where possible, keep stock out of sight.
- Smoke-generating devices that activate on unauthorised entry create a smokescreen and foil burglary. They’re designed not to damage stock. Also look at DNA sprays to ID criminals.
- Make sure your keys are not left on the premises and that only designated staff have access. In case of emergency, make sure there’s a list of keyholders who can be contacted.
